3rd Test: England v Australia at Manchester, 11-15 Aug 2005

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10.30am BST (09.30 GMT)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the third Ashes Test
The series is perfectly set-up 1-1 and both teams have everything
to play for as the action moves to Old Trafford
Very soon we will have news on the teams and the toss.
This is Anand Vasu, and I'll be your commentator for the game
The first news coming in is the England team: Trescothick, Strauss,
Vaughan, Bell, Pietersen, Flintoff, Geraint Jones, Giles, Hoggard,
        Harmison and Simon Jones
That is an unchanged team from the one that won the second Test by
        two runs
Australia have had their share of injury worries
Glenn McGrath was forced to pull out of the last Test, and since
then Lee has been in hospital with knee problems
But it seems that both of them have been passed fit
It still remains to be seen whether Australia will take a chance
with McGrath and Lee, or turn to Shaun Tait or Stuart Clark, who
was drafted into the squad at the last moment
And the good news for Australian supporters is that Glenn McGrath
        is fit, and will play.
This means that Michael Kasprowicz misses out
And the important bit of news - England have won the toss and
        chosen to bat first
That's the news for the moment, we'll keep you updated as and when
        more comes in
The Australian team, just to remind you, is: Langer, Hayden,
Ponting, Martyn, Clarke, Katich, Gilchrist, Warne, Lee, Gillespie,
        McGrath
There's just about 10 minutes for the start of play
Right, it's that time of the day. Play is about to get under way
        and we're good to go!
The players have come onto the field, Glenn McGrath charging in and
        testing his ankle out
It will be McGrath to begin proceedings
He's just chatting with Ricky Ponting about the kind of field he
        wants
       Trescothick will take first strike
Billy Bowden and Steve Bucknor are the umpires for this game
       And here we go!
0.1 McGrath to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off, McGrath is bang on target first up and
        Trescothick leaves the ball alone
0.2 McGrath to Trescothick, FOUR, banged in short and this one climbs
on Trescothick. Brute of a ball, Trescothick fends it awkwardly
and the ball flies over the slip for four
0.3 McGrath to Trescothick, no run, fuller this time and just outside
the off, McGrath right on the money as usual, played at and missed
0.4 McGrath to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and a
touch straighter, on middle and leg, defensive shot played and
        missed, rapped on the pad
0.5 McGrath to Trescothick, no run, perfect line and length again, seam
bolt upright, Trescothick thinks about playing but withdraws the
        bat at the last moment
0.6 McGrath to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and
outside the off, left alone to the keeper

warming up here, Strauss leaves it alone as it is outside the off

        to 89 MPH

this way in the past, Strauss is up to it and digs the ball out
1.5 Lee to Strauss, no run, just short of a good length and outside the

down to fine-leg to get off the mark

Brad Hodge is on the field as a substitute for Clarke
2.1 McGrath to Trescothick, three runs, on the pads this time and
Trescothick has no trouble working the ball through mid-wicket and
the batsmen run the first two hard enough to pick up a third
2.2 McGrath to Strauss, one run, short ball but slipping down the leg
side, Strauss gets on top of it nicely and tucks it away down to
        fine-leg
2.3 McGrath to Trescothick, (noball) no run, just short of a length and
outside the off, another one that does a bit off the pitch, moving
        away from the left-handed Trescothick
2.3 McGrath to Trescothick, no run, outside the off and shaping away,
        left alone
2.4 McGrath to Trescothick, no run, just short of a good length and

through mid-wicket for a couple of runs
2.6 McGrath to Trescothick, FOUR, short and a bit of width outside the

a bit, Strauss can easily duck under the ball

stumps, played at and missed, half-hearted shout for the lbw as
        the ball thuds into pad
3.4 Lee to Strauss, no run, good pace again as Lee sends down another
bouncer, Strauss carefully ducks under the ball
3.5 Lee to Strauss, no run, just short of a length and outside the off,
Strauss pokes at the ball and it takes the edge, but falls just
short of Langer at third slip

Strauss tries to work to the on side, misses, and is hit on the

        cover
26.4 McGrath to Trescothick, FOUR, full and outside the off, Trescothick

        the left-handed Trescothick, defended
26.6 McGrath to Trescothick, three runs, short one dug in, Trescothick

27.6 Gillespie to Trescothick, FOUR, timed magnificently back past the
bowler to the long-off fence to bring up Trescothick's half-
        century! Cracking shot that

Apologies for the slight change in score there. The batsmen had
taken two runs off the no-ball in which Vaughan was bowled and we

        Gilchrist
44.3 Lee to Vaughan, no run, another short one, another effort ball from
Lee who lets out a Monica Seles style grunt when delivering, but
again it's a waste of energy as Vaughan ducks

Vaughan waits on it nicely and punches it off the back foot
through midwicket for a couple of runs

Match State: Stumps - Day 1

Hello and welcome to the start of the second day's play of the
third Ashes Test at Old Trafford
Australia clawed their way back with some late wickets towards the
        end of the first day
But England are still well placed at 341/5 with Andrew Flintoff
about to come to the crease
Ian Bell defended stoutly to begin with and grew more confident and
fluent as the day wore on, playing some delectable cover drives
The first ball will be bowled soon enough so don't go too far
I'm Anand Vasu, your commentator, and will be more than happy to
call the play for you today
The players are on the field now
The local hero Andrew Flintoff is walking out to bat and Old
        Trafford roars in appreciation
Play is about to get under way. Fasten your seat-belts!
It is Ian Bell on strike. Glenn 'Pigeon' McGrath has the ball in
his hand and is good to go
89.1 McGrath to Bell, no run, full and on the off, the ball wobbles just
a touch in the air but ends up pretty straight, Bell is very
watchful and pats the ball back down the pitch to McGrath
89.2 McGrath to Bell, no run, slightly shorter this time and outside the
off stump, Bell moves across nicely, covers the line and defends
89.3 McGrath to Bell, no run, just short of a good length and outside
the off stump, left well alone to the keeper
89.4 McGrath to Bell, no run, this one starts outside the off stump and
swings in late after pitching, Bell defends but the ball goes off
the inside edge on to the pad and to the leg side
89.5 McGrath to Bell, no run, fullish and outside the off, this one
hints to go away from Bell, but it is far enough outside the off
        to be comfortably ignored
89.6 McGrath to Bell, no run, slightly quicker, McGrath and the
troublesome ankle are warming up, the ball shapes away, Bell plays
        at it and misses

90.2 Lee to Flintoff, no run, fullish and outside the off, Flintoff
pokes at this one and misses, the ball slides just past the
        outside edge

the leg side for a single

outside the off, Flintoff watches it carefully but leaves the ball
        well alone
91.5 McGrath to Flintoff, no run, and again Flintoff is happy to leave

eye in on what looks to be a belter of a batting pitch
91.6 McGrath to Flintoff, no run, just short of a good length again, and
this time on the stumps, played to the off side to end a second
