2nd Test: England v India at Nottingham, 8-12 Aug 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 11am local time (10am GMT/15.30 IST)

       Good Morning!
Welcome to Trent Bridge in Nottingham for the second npower Test
        match between England and India.
England lead the four-Test match series 1-0 after beating India
rather convincingly by 170 runs at Lord's.
Both the teams have made some major changes.
17-year-old Parthiv Patel makes his Test debut for India. Ajay
        Ratra has an injured toe.
       Harbhajan Singh replaces Anil Kumble.
There are two debutants for England: Fast bowler Steve Harmison and
        opening batsman Robert Key.
Ashley Giles has been left out, which also means that Dominic Cork
        plays.
The news about the pitch is that, there is some dampness to it. It
is not a bald one by any chance, there is enough grass to keep the
        fast bowlers happy.
Sourav Ganguly has won the toss and elected to bat.
       The teams are as follows:
England: MP Vaughan, RWT Key, MA Butcher, *N Hussain, JP Crawley,
+AJ Stewart, A Flintoff, C White, MJ Hoggard, DG Cork, SJ
        Harmison.
India: W Jaffer, V Sehwag, R Dravid, SR Tendulkar, *SC Ganguly, VVS
Laxman, +PA Patel, AB Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh, Z Khan, A Nehra
It is not a sunny morning here - a few clouds hanging around. The
current temperature is around 17 degrees Celsius.
The forecast is for some showers later in the day.
Play will start in just about eight mins or so.
Play is about to start here
The first hour is going to be very important - India does not have
a good record at Trent Bridge - least with the first wicket
        partnership
The highest opening partnership for India at Trent Bridge is 34
runs - between Pankaj Roy and NJ Contractor in 1959
The umpires and players are in the middle
Wasim Jaffer is to take strike, three slips, a gully and point.
Matthew Hoggard has the new ball with him
The Umpires: RE Koertzen (SA) and RB Tiffin (Zim)
       Here we are!

After electing to bat first - India have scored 61/2 off 28 overs
        in the first session
Jaffer was the first batsman to be dismissed, bowled by Hoggard for
a duck! Playing away from the body to a beautiful outswinger and
inside edging it onto his stumps
dravid played and missed on numerous outswingers and finally got an
edge to one from Hoggard and Robert Key at first slip took a neat
catch - Dravid made just 13
Sehwag is unbeaten on 37, beaten a lot of times outside the off.
Tendulkar took some 16 balls to get off the mark - has not looked
all that good so far. Survived a very close call for lbw too. He
        is unbeaten on 10
Hoggard has easily been the best bowler with the figures of 10-4-
        17-2
Cork too got the ball to swing a great deal - bit was on the
        expensive side
Debutant Harmison has been given a brief - go around the wicket and
dig it in short - he has bowled four maiden over so far.
Freddie was guilty of not attacking the batsman enough.
India will be pleased that they have not lost more wickets before
        lunch.

The umpires offer the light to the batsmen - what happens next is -
you know what! They walk back to the pavilion.
       Bad light stops play
Play has not been called off for the day - we will be back as soon
        the light improves.
       Good Morning!
Hello and welcome to a wet Trent Bridge in Nottingham for the
second npower Test match between England and India.
Today is the second day of the Test match, and things don't look
        good at all.
It has been pouring down all night - and a lot of water has come
        down.
It would take anything close to a couple of hours after the rain
stops to get the ground ready.
According to the groundsman, we might have a start sometime later
in the day - probably close to the scheduled Tea time.
It is going to be a long wait for the players and everyone as we
wait for the sunshine here at Nottingham.
Having said that, the forecast is not that good for the day - more
heavy showers expected later in the day.
We will keep you updated about the weather.

1615 Hrs GMT: Update from Trent Bridge: It is still raining
Hello and welcome back to Trent Bridge.
This time it is to say good bye for the day. It is still raining
        here in Nottingham.
Another short day's play, India have moved on to 302/8.
We will be back tomorrow at 1000 Hrs GMT, 1530 Hrs IST. Even though
the forecast for the next two days is not all that promising, let
us hope for the best. Thanks for being with us. A very good
        evening to all.

Match State: Stumps - Day 2

       Good Morning!
Hello and welcome to Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Today is the third
        day of the second Test.
We have some good news for you, even though the skies are grey, we
will have a start on time today.
So no rain in Nottingham at this moment, though the forecast is for
some showers later in the day.
The maximum temperature for the day should be around 19 degrees
        Celsius.
India will resume on their overnight score of 302/8. Harbhajan
Singh and Zaheer Khan are the two batsmen.
And with last man Ashish Nehra to come in, India would be more than
happy if they could get to 350.
The tourists would be hoping for some early break-throughs when
        England go out to bat.
There is something in the track for the fast bowlers. Apart from
Matthew Hoggard, no English bowler has been able to put pressure
        on the Indian batsmen.
If Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra and Ajit Agarkar can make some early
inroads, England would find themselves on the back foot.
There is not much of a change to the track. After all the water
that came down, there must be a great deal of moisture in it
The umpires and players are in the middle. We are all set for the
        start.
It is a gloomy summer day. Zaheer Khan is the batsman on strike.
        Andrew Flintoff is the bowler
To bowl right-arm over the wicket
91.1 Flintoff to Khan, no run, beaten, outside the off
91.2 Flintoff to Khan, no run, well, it doesn't look like India getting
to 350, late movement away, squares up the batsman and beats him
        completely
91.3 Flintoff to Khan, no run, again, plays and misses outside the off -
as three slips and two gullies wait for the edge.
91.4 Flintoff to Khan, no run, fast delivery, just outside the off, goes
right through the defence, through to Stewart
91.5 Flintoff to Khan, no run, almost got him! Fired in straight, Zaheer
Khan once again squared up, gets a bat on it, blocks it.
91.6 Flintoff to Khan, no run, pace and extra bounce outside the off,
        left alone

Harbhajan Singh to it, like a moth to fire, plays at it and

curving away late, Harbhajan Singh defends

middle and off, hint of late swing too, gets right behind the line
        and blocks it
92.4 Hoggard to Harbhajan Singh, FOUR, full, wide of the off stump, big
outswing on it, opens the face of the bat and runs it between
slips and gully - down to third-man for four, useful runs!
92.5 Hoggard to Harbhajan Singh, no run, big big outswinger again, left
        alone
92.6 Hoggard to Harbhajan Singh, FOUR, ooh! Plays at the big outswinger,

to swing it away from leg and middle, Harbhajan Singh gets back

gets to the fence, and trickles over for four.
94.2 Hoggard to Harbhajan Singh, no run, outside the off, swinging away,
        left alone
94.3 Hoggard to Harbhajan Singh, one run, slightly short in length,

95.6 Flintoff to Harbhajan Singh, FOUR, Now this is a tremendous shot,
flicked away off his toes, wonderful use of the wrists, even the
stylish batsman from Hyderabad would be proud of playing this,
        cracking shot for four!

Z Khan 9* (18b 2x4) Harbhajan Singh 36* (20b 8x4)

Harbhajan Singh has made 36 off just 20 balls, with the help of
        eight boundaries

Harbhajan Singh doing a very good job here, surely the team
management will have to rank him above Anil Kumble
96.5 Hoggard to Harbhajan Singh, one run, cracking shot through covers,
looked four the moment it left the bat, nice clean hit, Hussain
does well to get a hand on it, just the single

97.5 Flintoff to Khan, no run, bang! Digs this in short, angling away,
        left alone

everything to get and edge, just can't find that

good for the Turbanator, slapped away through covers for four,
Hussain must be wondering what on earth he has to do
100.3 Harmison to Harbhajan Singh, OUT: Gone! Harbhajan Singh couldn't
deal with the extra bounce from Harmison, gets a leading edge and
ball goes in the air towards covers, Hussain run sin and completes
        a very good catch.

       India 356/9, Partnership of 61

100.6 Harmison to Khan, no run

End of over 101 (5 runs) India 357/9
SJ Harmison 20-7-57-3 - Radcliffe Road End
A Nehra 0* (1b) Z Khan 14* (30b 3x4)

This (61 runs) is the highest 9th wicket partnership for India at
Trent Bridge - beating the 60 added by R Dravid and BKV Prasad in
        1996
101.1 Hoggard to Nehra, OUT: All over! Nehra nicks a beautiful outswinger
through to Stewart - almost an unplayable delivery, would have got
even a much better batsman with it, India bowled out for 357.

       India 357/10, Partnership of 1
       A Nehra c Stewart b Hoggard 0 (2b 0x4 0x6)
       Z Khan 14* (30b 3x4) MJ Hoggard 35.1-10-105-4 (2w)

India must be very happy to have scored 357 runs after electing to
bat first on a track that helped the seamers a great deal
Hoggard was easily the best bowler 35.1-10-105-4
Even though Harmison picked up three wickets, English bowling gave
        away too many easy runs.
Credit should also be given to Sehwag (106), Ganguly (68) and
        Harbhajan Singh (54)

Not much of a help for the Indian bowlers from this track. Mind
you, there is still a lot of moisture in this track, it is just
that Zaheer Khan and Nehra has got carried away - and have been
        hitting the deck very hard
       Agarkar continues
10.1 Agarkar to Vaughan, no run, outside the off, outswing too, left
