Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 9.30am local time (4am GMT)

Hello and welcome to the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi for the start of
the second and final Test between India and Zimbabwe
After winning by an innings and 101-runs in Nagpur, a confident
India loook to close out the series
Zimbabwe are desperate to pull one back and square the series
The wicket here looks flat, quite dry and full of runs initially.
It will however begin to take turn very early on
Zimbabwe will look to their one spinner Ray Price to do the job for
        them opn this wicket
Early breakthroughs are essential in conditions like this and the
seamers have their task cut out - bowl a good line and length
without allowing the batsmen too much time to settle in
Andy Flower will have to pull his socks up and be the mainstay of
        the batting for the visitors
For India, the batting looks well stocked and the spinners are
        firing on all cylinders
Zimbabwe have won the toss here and expectedly elected to bat first
Zimbabwe make one change - bringing in Dion Ebrahim for Gavin
        Rennie
India too make a change - one that might surprise a few - VVS
Laxman is dropped and Virender Sehwag comes in at his expense
The Imndian fielders are on the outfield now, all together in a
huddle, discussing last minute strategy before they take their
        positions
The Zimbabwean openers too are out in the middle now
       Srinath begins the proceedings
0.1 Srinath to Carlisle, no run, just short of a length and outside the
off, good line and length, piunched to covers off thge back foot,

averages over 200 with the bat. Unbeaten on 81, his knock will

Dion Ebrahim's role also cannot be under-estimated, providing as he

Thats Stumps on Day 1 in New Delhi
Zimbabwe have put on 260 for 6 in the 90 overs
They started badly losing their skipper in the very first over for
        a duck
Zaheer then struck twice dismissing Gripper and Campbell cheaply
Andy Flower took charge then and played him back into form scoring
        a strokeful 92
Ebrahim gave him good company and is still playing on 82* - his
        highest Test score
Grant Flower made a useful 30 before he was unnecessarily run out
from a direct hit from Kumble
Ebrahim was the culprit there running his senior partner out
Kumble then struck again by picking the wicket of Heath Streak with
a ball that kept a bit low
Friend and Ebrahim played upto Stumps after that
The Indian bowling didnt look very penetrative today - wasnt good
as it was during the first day in Nagpur
The highlight of the day was Deep Dasgupta's wicket keeping
He hardly gloved any ball today
Lot of frustrations for the Indian bowlers with Dasgupta behind the
        wickets

Match State: Stumps - Day 1

Hello and welcome to the start of the second day's play at the
        Kotla in Delhi
Zimbabwe are at 260/6 and pressing on to a bigger score. India will
dearly want to restrict them to less than 300 and make the most of
        the wicket early on
This wicket is very dry and on the verge of breaking up - batting
later on will not be easy at all
Let's now pick up the action - the players are onto the field and
        ready to start off
       It's Srinath to Dion Ebrahim
90.1 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, just short of a length and outside the
off, left well alone by Ebrahim starting off on 82 and looking for
        a ton
90.2 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, fuller and teasing just outside the
off, a bit of seam movement away from the bat, played and missed
90.3 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run
90.4 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, outside the off and back of a length,
keeps a bit lower than the others, left alone
90.5 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run
90.6 Srinath to Ebrahim, one run, short delivery on the middle and leg,
played away wide of the midwicket fielder for the first runs of
        the morning

End of over 91 (1 run) Zimbabwe 261/6
J Srinath 13-3-23-1 (4nb) - Pavilion End
DD Ebrahim 83* (189b 9x4) TJ Friend 7* (38b)

91.1 Khan to Ebrahim, no run, full and outside the off, left alone
91.2 Khan to Ebrahim, three runs, full and outside ide the off, driven
        beautifully through covers
91.3 Khan to Friend, no run
91.4 Khan to Friend, two runs, worked away neatly through the on side
91.5 Khan to Friend, no run, just short of a length, outside the off,
left alone, by the batsman and the keeper, how Dasgupta can fumble
that is amazing, as his counterpart Saba Karim once did, Dasgupta
takes the ball on his chest, playing 'Dil Se' as we say in Inda!
91.6 Khan to Friend, one run

End of over 92 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 267/6

TJ Friend 10* (42b) DD Ebrahim 86* (191b 9x4)

92.1 Srinath to Friend, no run, fuller and on the off, played back to
        the bowler
92.2 Srinath to Friend, two runs, just short of a length and outside the
        off, punched through covers
92.3 Srinath to Friend, three runs, and once again the same, short and
wide, punched efficiently off the back foot through covers
92.4 Srinath to Ebrahim, two runs, and once again the ball is worked
away easily past the cover region for a brace
92.5 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, short and wide from Srinath - left
        alone to the keeper
92.6 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, and once more a Srinath special - you
guessed it - short and wide outside the off stump, left well alone

End of over 93 (7 runs) Zimbabwe 274/6
J Srinath 14-3-30-1 (4nb) - Pavilion End
TJ Friend 15* (45b) DD Ebrahim 88* (194b 9x4)

93.1 Khan to Friend, FOUR, short, quick and on the off, slanting away,
the perfect ball to bowl to the tailender - only if you want him
to open the face of the bat and run the ball to the fence though,
        cracking shot from Friend
93.2 Khan to Friend, no run, once again short and wide, enthusiastic cut
shot, not good enoguh though, misses easily
93.3 Khan to Friend, no run, a real express pace one here from Zaheer
Khan, he does that every now and then, bouncer on the leg stump,
Friend gets out of the way in a hurry, he won't be your Friend for
much longer if you bowl to him like that!
93.4 Khan to Friend, FOUR, on the off, just short of a length, driven
beautifully on the up through the off side, Friend loves it there
93.5 Khan to Friend, no run, Zaheer Khan comes around the wicket now, no
fast bowler likes to be hit for two boundaries by one of his own
kind - short one on the off, guided to point
93.6 Khan to Friend, no run, down the leg side and fuller, swishy swat
played at the ball, through to the keeper and surprise surprise
        Dasgupta gloves that one neatly!

DD Ebrahim 88* (194b 9x4) TJ Friend 23* (51b 2x4)

94.1 Srinath to Ebrahim, FOUR, overpitched and ojn the pads, variety
ball from Srinath - even he tires of short and wide once in a
while, spanking drive with the full face of the bat Ebrahim gets
into the nineties with a neat stroke that leaves mid on diving in
        despair
94.2 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, good length ball outside the off, left
        alone to the keeper
94.3 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run
94.4 Srinath to Ebrahim, one run, slower ball on the stumps, full and
straight, Ebrahim sees it early and gently caresses the ball to
the on side for a single, well picked
94.5 Srinath to Friend, no run, quicker and straight, Friend plays it
back to the mid on fielder
94.6 Srinath to Friend, no run, short one on the stumps, the ball swings
in late, Friend duck-weaves out of the way, Dasgupta dives full
length and stops the ball, Bengal has always been a state
passionate about its football - that was a goalkeeper style dive!

95.1 Khan to Ebrahim, one run, full and straight, Ebrahim gets one run
closer to three figures, tucked away to the on side
95.2 Khan to Friend, (noball) no run, short, quick and just outside the
off, a restrained Friend weaves out of the way, through to the
keeper, he gets a run anyway as Zaheer Khan oversteps the mark
95.2 Khan to Friend, no run, slower one outside the off, pushed through
a bit fuller, well disguised, Friend's drive hits nothing but
clean air as the ball slips past the edge
95.3 Khan to Friend, no run, left alone wide outside the off
95.4 Khan to Friend, no run, short and quick, left alone purely on
length as the ball sails over the stumps to the keeper
95.5 Khan to Friend, no run, short of a length once more and outside the
        off, left alone
95.6 Khan to Friend, no run, just short of a length and on the stumps,

off, watched carefully and left alone for the keeper to mop up
96.3 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, full this time and on the off, driven
        to covers
96.4 Srinath to Ebrahim, OUT: Oh no Asoka de Silva! A good umpire gives
a poor decision that ends a young man's dream! just short of a
length and on the stumps, bowled from wide of the crase, ball hits

with the full face of the bat to the man at covers
