Welcome to CricInfo's Exclusive Live Coverage of the first Test
match between India and Zimbabwe.
This is a two-Test match series and we are here at Vidarbha Cricket
Association Ground at Nagpur for the first Test match.
India are the clear favourites to take the series. Having said
that, one just cannot rule out this Zimbabwe side.
They have not had much luck or form coming into this tour, and as
Cricket is a game associated with the 'glorious uncertainties',
one just cannot rule out the chances Zimbabwe.
India and Zimbabwe have so far played 7 Test matches. India have
the slight upper hand of having won three Tests.
Zimbabwe won two and the remaining two were drawn. India holods a
better home record of having won two Tests and drawn one.
This will be the seventh Test match at this venue. The record at
this ground is not so inspiring, just the two Test matches
producing a result.
In the very first Test match to be played here, in 1969 New Zealand
beat India by 169 runs.
Venkatraghavan picked up nine wickets in that Test match. India
were undone by a brilliant spell of left-arm spin bowling (23-11-
34-5) by Hedley John Howarth.
The other result came in the year 1986, India beating Sri Lanka by
an innings and 106 runs.
Dilip Vengsarkar and Mohinder Amarnath hit hundreds and the left-
arm spin of Maninder Singh took care of the rest of the match, he
picked up a ten-wicket-haul for the Test.
India and Zimbabwe played out a draw in November 2000 in a
remarkable Test match.
India had piled on a huge 609/6 decl, thanks to a brilliant double
hundred (201) and tons from Dravid (162) and SS Das (110).
Grant Flower hit a superb century to take Zimbabwe to 382 all out.
Following on, Zimbabwe were taken to the safety of a draw by a
remarkable knock of 232* by Andy Flower
Alistair Canpbell too hit a century giving Flower good support.
Talking about Andy Flower's batting, he has such a good record in
Test cricket, averaging 53.55 in making 4552 runs. He saves his
best fort India though,
cracking three big hundreds in making 1035 runs at an amazing
average of 129.37
Incidentally Sarandeep Singh made his debut here in Nagpur in the
afore-mentioned Test.
The Max temp would be around the 33 celsius mark. It is clear blue
skies here in Nagpur. It is the humidity, which is going to make
it a bit difficult for the players, 87% !
This is an important series for many players. Most importantly for
Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, they have to start scoring heavily.
Both the players are under some pressure.
Rahul Dravid is making his way back to the team after a shoulder
injury kept him out of the one-day matches against England.
Dravid has remarkable record against Zimbabwe, in Five Test
matches he has scored 732 runs at an average of 146.40
Which also includes 3 hundreds and two fifties.
This pitch would help the spinners as it has done in the past.
