2nd Test: New Zealand v West Indies at Wellington, 26-30 Dec 1999

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match scheduled to begin at 12pm local time (2300GMT)

two changes in the West Indies line up, with off spinner Nehemiah
Perry replacing leg spinner Dinanath Ramnarine, and Darren Ganga
replacing Ricardo Powell in the middle
surprising considering Perry is a fairly defensive bowler, while
Ramnarine impressed in his attacking role at Hamilton, plus this
pitch has a decided greenish tinge to it
and if it was Ramnarine to be replaced on this wicket, surely Merv
Dillon was the one in line to take his place, interesting
        selection
New Zealand have made two changes, debutant Mathew Sinclair to bat
at number three, replacing the injured Matthew Horne, Craig
Spearman promoted up to open with Gary Stead
the other is a horses for courses one, with off spinner Paul
Wiseman replaced by left arm swing bowler Shayne O'Connor
Brian Lara wins the toss again and has decided to bowl first on a
good wicket, but looking to assist bowlers early on
the crowd is very good, about the same as it was for the inaugural
Boxing Day Test last year against India, 9000 and building, in
sunny conditions but there's a bit of a chilly Southerly breeze
        rolling through
0.1 Walsh to Spearman, no run
0.2 Walsh to Spearman, no run
0.3 Walsh to Spearman, one run, turned to square leg, poor misfield
gives away the first runs of the Test
0.4 Walsh to Stead, no run, down the leg side, doesn't quite get a
        touch on it
0.5 Walsh to Stead, no run, squirts an edge away along the ground to
        gully
0.6 Walsh to Stead, no run, leaves alone outside off stump

first ball up and King is already back into the act from the last

        from King

outside the line, bowler doesn't bother appealing, only the slips

7.1 King to Stead, no run, firmly pushed square on the off side, able
fielding at point almost sees Spearman in trouble at the bowler's
end after backing up looking for the run, has to scramble back to
        safety
7.2 King to Stead, legbye: one run, turned down to fine leg off the pad
7.3 King to Spearman, no run, ducks underneath a very short bouncer
7.4 King to Spearman, three runs, shot of the day so far, shortish ball
cracked through cover, really got on top of that one, outfield
just stops it inside the rope, third umpire has a wee look but
        it's all OK
7.5 King to Stead, one run, turned down to fine leg, little nick on to
        the pad there
7.6 King to Spearman, no run, driven firmly straight up the pitch,
bowler does well to stop it reaching down to his left on follow
        through

8.1 Walsh to Stead, one run, taps it away towards vacant cover, tip and
run and they make the single easily as mid off and point have to
        get to the ball
8.2 Walsh to Spearman, no run, very wide one down the leg side, nothing
        required by the batsman there
8.3 Walsh to Spearman, no run, leaves outside off stump
8.4 Walsh to Spearman, no run, worked away from off stump straight to
        square leg
8.5 Walsh to Spearman, one run, pushed from the back foot on the leg
side of the pitch, batsman stop in their tracks as short midwicket
and the bowler try to get to it but fail, easy run to mid on
8.6 Walsh to Stead, (noball) two runs, oversteps, cut away between
        gully and point
8.6 Walsh to Stead, no run, defends into the covers

9.2 King to Stead, no run, jumping on the crease, defends down to the
fielder now in place at mid on
9.3 King to Stead, no run, hopping about again, off the pad to short
        leg
9.4 King to Stead, no run, defends up to Rose at mid off
now there's a surprise, King misses his run up again
9.5 King to Stead, no run, nudged away to cover point
9.6 King to Stead, no run, angling down the leg side, tries to tickle
it away but can't get a touch on it

CM Spearman 8* (30b) GR Stead 13* (31b 1x4)

10.1 Walsh to Spearman, no run, defends down to square leg
10.2 Walsh to Spearman, one run, this time works it forward of Ganga at
square leg, easy single to midwicket
10.3 Walsh to Stead, bye: FOUR, abysmal glovework by Jacobs, Stead
ducked under a short ball that didn't bounce too high, somehow
Jacobs held the gloves in place expecting the ball, but it went
straight past him at a comfortable waist height, bizarre
umpire Tiffin took an eternity to signal it too, waiting until the
bowler had the ball back in hand
10.4 Walsh to Stead, FOUR, guided between third slip and gully, a little
uppish and a risky shot, but finds the gap and that's all that
matters while you ride your luck
10.5 Walsh to Stead, no run, fishes outside off, beaten, Stead jogs away
to try and calm (steady?) himself
10.6 Walsh to Stead, no run, defends up to mid off

        Rose at mid off
11.2 King to Spearman, no run, and same again
11.3 King to Spearman, one run, jumping on the crease, pushed back on
the leg side of the pitch, just past wide mid on coming in to
        field, easy single
11.4 King to Stead, OUT: the first blow is struck, Stead's luck is at
last out, regulation edge straight to Campbell at second slip

but again, despite not scoring heavily, Stead is part of a New
Zealand opening partnership that lasts beyond single figures, and
gives them at least some sort of opening platform
big moment for debutant Mathew Sinclair who's walking to the crease
11.5 King to Sinclair, no run, welcome to Test cricket Mr Sinclair,
        bouncer, ducks underneath
11.6 King to Sinclair, no run, and first bat on ball, jumping in defence
on his crease, in close on the off side

CM Spearman 10* (35b) MS Sinclair 0* (2b)

12.1 Walsh to Spearman, no run, ducks underneath a bouncer, has to skip
away to the off side to regain balance and composure
12.2 Walsh to Spearman, five runs, squeezes out a full ball towards
cover, they take off for a dodge single, Spearman looked in a
little trouble as the throw came in, but it went well over the
stumps and the backing up was poor, four overthrows
side on replays show Spearman may have just made it home had it
hit, but it was rather tight
12.3 Walsh to Sinclair, FOUR, and what a way to get off the mark in your
Test career! big inside edge past the stumps to the fine boundary
12.4 Walsh to Sinclair, no run, defends on the off side
12.5 Walsh to Sinclair, no run, jumps forward to defend with bat/pad
        towards mid off
12.6 Walsh to Sinclair, no run, drops it away towards wide mid off,
takes a couple of steps forward before shouting 'NO!' to his
        partner

       partner, rather
13.1 King to Spearman, one run, pushed up towards straight mid on,
Spearman calls for the quick run, Sinclair a bit more hesitant,
but they make it safely enough in the end
13.2 King to Sinclair, no run, full ball, defends up to mid on
13.3 King to Sinclair, FOUR, superb stuff from Sinclair, a world of
difference to the one to get himself off the mark, short and wide
and he absolutely climbed into it, smashing it high over backward
point, total confidence in that shot so early on
13.4 King to Sinclair, no run, defends into the ground towards Rose up
        to field at short cover
13.5 King to Sinclair, legbye: one run, down the leg side, off the pad
towards short fine leg, Jacobs removes a glove to field
13.6 King to Spearman, no run, a real shooter but not threatening as
it's down leg, Spearman leans towards the off side to avoid,
        Jacobs takes high up

and it's time for drinks, a fairly good paced opening hour to this
match, 48 runs and a wicket in 14 overs
14.1 Walsh to Sinclair, one run, played up towards vacant mid on, easy
        run
14.2 Walsh to Spearman, one run, and identical to the last, easy runs,
that raises the New Zealand 50 in good time
14.3 Walsh to Sinclair, no run, into the thigh pad and drops at his
feet, only short leg half appeals for some reason
14.4 Walsh to Sinclair, no run, huge appeal for a caught behind from an
inside edge, but it can't convince umpire Tiffin, replays show the
bat was a mile away from it
nice attempt at convincing the umpire by charging towards the
bowler in delight, but not this time chaps
14.5 Walsh to Sinclair, no run, defends up to mid off
14.6 Walsh to Sinclair, no run, good solid forward defensive shot back
        to the bowler

CA Walsh 8-1-25-0 (1nb) - Scoreboard End
CM Spearman 17* (40b) MS Sinclair 9* (15b 2x4)

15.1 King to Spearman, two runs, turned down to deep backward square
leg, they get the second run as long leg has a bit of a chase
15.2 King to Spearman, no run, guided away to Griffith at gully
15.3 King to Spearman, one run, turned down to long leg
15.4 King to Sinclair, two runs, another confident stroke from the
debutant, cut away between the narrow angle gap between gully and
point, no real power on it though so it pulls up well before the
        boundary
King pulls out of his run u for the third time
15.5 King to Sinclair, no run, defends on the off side
15.6 King to Sinclair, no run, stands back tall in defence on the
        crease, up to mid off

first bowling change of the innings, Walsh replaced by Franklyn
Rose at the Scoreboard End after a spell of 8-1-25-0
16.1 Rose to Spearman, no run, useful ball first up, rising into the
body awkwardly, hopping on the crease to defend down square on the
        leg side
16.2 Rose to Spearman, no run, jumping again in defence, this time on
        the off side
16.3 Rose to Spearman, no run, down the leg side, Spearman avoids the
line of the ball to leave it alone
16.4 Rose to Spearman, no run, down leg, this time he has a heave but is
        nowhere near it
16.5 Rose to Spearman, FOUR, edged in the air between second slip and
        gully
now the cordon is rearranged to four slips and no gully
16.6 Rose to Spearman, no run, turned from leg towards Walsh at wide mid
on, Sinclair was looking for a possible run but Spearman was busy
doing some gardening in his crease

17.1 King to Sinclair, two runs, forced into the ground from the back
foot and through vacant cover, well run first enables a quick
second as Perry fields from cover point
17.2 King to Sinclair, no run, seams back, taken high on the thigh pad
as he loses the bottom hand off the bat
17.3 King to Sinclair, FOUR, Sinclair is enjoying it out there, bold
stroke lifting a short ball over backward point
this is rather reminiscent of the New Zealand bowlers on the first
day at Hamilton, giving Sherwin Campbell oodles of runs through
        backward point
17.4 King to Sinclair, no run, defends square on the off stump
17.5 King to Sinclair, FOUR, superb shot, a little short, but it was
rather straight, but he still cut well, through the even larger
        gap through backward point now
amazing Lara has widened the gap there rather than close it off
just 2 slips, gully and point remain in place
17.6 King to Sinclair, one run, turns it down very fine on the leg side,
11 from that King over, time for a spell after 9 straight, one
        suspects

        on the block
18.3 Rose to Sinclair, no run, shortish ball, defends into the ground
        short of short leg
18.4 Rose to Sinclair, FOUR, Sinclair on fire, 26 from just 28 balls,
forced off the back foot through extra cover, just wide of the mid
off fielder, a little in the air but hit just well enough to reach
        the rope
       overtakes Spearman now
       Spearman rather
18.5 Rose to Sinclair, two runs, down leg, helped away to long leg, King
        from fine leg to field
18.6 Rose to Sinclair, no run, a loose shot this time, gets carried
away, having a flash at a short and rather wide one outside off

outside off, leaves it alone as it passes by outside off
19.4 King to Spearman, no run, similar again, even wider this time
19.5 King to Spearman, no run, defends back on the off side of the
        pitch, bowler fields
19.6 King to Spearman, OUT: bizarre stuff, Spearman plays a one-day
stroke, trying to lift one over the covers but spoons it straight
down the throat of Walsh at mid off, everyone just stands around,

it was a fairly full ball, shouldn't just been driven through the

        and loft it
that evens things up in the first session, after the New Zealanders
were threatening to get away on the West Indies
captain Fleming is the new batsman
20.1 Rose to Sinclair, two runs, the wicket doesn't stop Sinclair,
turned away through vacant midwicket for a couple more, 30(31) on
        debut, amazing stuff
20.2 Rose to Sinclair, no run, sways out of the way of a very short ball
        wide outside off stump
20.3 Rose to Sinclair, no run, pokes at one in the corridor of
uncertainty, feet still on the crease, fiddling at it well away
from the body, good ball putting uncertainty into the batsman's
        mind
20.4 Rose to Sinclair, two runs, Sinclair prepared to go for it, driving
partly in the air, wide of mid off, not a lot of timing in it so
        it's overhauled
20.5 Rose to Sinclair, no run, defends square on the off side
20.6 Rose to Sinclair, no run, shaped to play but then withdraws the

21.1 King to Fleming, no run, shapes to play, he too decides to leave,
rather late as he moved towards off to play it before pulling up
        the bat
21.2 King to Fleming, no run, leaves outside off
21.3 King to Fleming, no run, straight ball, Fleming characteristically
tries to whip it away off his pads but can't get past a very good
diving save by Adams at forward short leg
now Adams moves back further from the bat
21.4 King to Fleming, no run, defends square on the off side
21.5 King to Fleming, no run, good straight short ball on off stump,
        defends down at his toes
21.6 King to Fleming, FOUR, magnificent straight drive, pitched up full
and Fleming's quick to capitalise, beats mid off with timing and

22.1 Rose to Sinclair, two runs, cutting again, gets it rather fine,
well wide of the third slip, a fair bit of work for Ganga
sprinting around at third man, does well but can't prevent an easy
        two
22.2 Rose to Sinclair, two runs, the twos just keep coming for Sinclair,
worked off the pad through backward square leg, King up from long
        leg to field
22.3 Rose to Sinclair, no run, defends towards cover, Fleming looking
for a run but Griffith falls to his left at cover to field,
        sending him back
22.4 Rose to Sinclair, legbye: one run, hopping on the crease, into the
pad, drops away in close on the leg side, easy run as no fielder's
        within cooee of that one
22.5 Rose to Fleming, no run, leaves alone outside off stump

a good session for New Zealand, ticking over at a good rate, though
the wicket of Spearman was rather weak, and yet again, both

and that is stumps, Sinclair survives to stumps, unbeaten on 123,
Astle gives him a pat on the back for a mighty job well done on
debut, a standing ovation as he walks back to the pavilion, from
        what crowd still remain
surprisingly quite a few of them departed from tea onwards, despite
it being a Boxing Day holiday, with nice sunny weather and the
home team doing rather well, with a debutant batsman poised on a
        century
New Zealand comfortably winning this day, slowing up in the final
session with 84 in 32 overs, similar to the middle session, for
just the loss of Fleming, easing themselves into a strong position
however don't forget the West Indies were even better placed at
282/1 after the first day's play at Hamilton and ended up losing
that one fairly easily, so this match (and series) is far from
        over just yet
the West Indian bowlers were disappointing today, Walsh had a good
couple of spells, King was demanding at the end of the day, and
Adams and Chanderpaul contained tidily, but overall they lacked
        any sort of edge
there were few signs that any degree of collapse could be
instigated by anything but inept New Zealand batting, but even
that didn't come as everyone did a job, and Sinclair did what many
others struggle to do - go on to a big score
that wraps things up from Wellington, join us tomorrow at 12pm
