Date-stamped : 31 May94 - 14:25 NEW ZEALAND v YORKSHIRE (3 day Tour Match) played at Headingley, 24-26 May 94 ====> Day 2, 25 May 94 (By David Hopps) ILLINGWORTH SEES WHITE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE LIGHT Craig White's first experience of the New Zealanders' attack will have persuaded him that there is no better time to be considered as a possible Test debutant. Making the transition from county cricket does not seem a partic- ularly taxing proposition against an attack that is no great shakes. Succeeding against the Australian tourists might be a persuasive case for a Test debut against Australia; taking toll of the Kiwis in their present parlous bowling state bears little relevance at all. Yorkshire's 408 for five from 91.4 overs was a breeze. That said, White, the likeliest outsider when the first Test team under Ray- mond Illingworth's chairmanship is named on Sunday, advanced his cause with considerable verve. Against Essex, Illingworth observed a century and five wickets achieved with great resolve. The mood of White's 59 yesterday, from only 65 balls, was more free-spirited. It was an exuberant innings from a man spilling over with enthusiasm to advance his cause. From the 23 deliveries he faced before tea he struck five boun- daries. His drives through the off side possessed a greater sheen than ever, as if he had been busy with polish and duster over- night. White turned down an offer for bad light - unnecessary while the light is shining upon him - and reached his half-century in the gloom by hooking Pringle for six. Another century seemed well within his range but Davis, who bowled 17 no-balls and clearly regards the crease as a basis for negotiation, reached his own hundred and then had him caught at the wicket. Illingworth left almost immediately, his thoughts switching to a Bradford League cup match. Blakey's fluent unbeaten 84, made from 101 balls, was largely overlooked - a reminder, considering his two Test caps on England's tour of India only 15 months ago, how quickly tastes can change.
