Date-stamped : 29 Jan95 - 10:28 Wednesday, 27/10/93, North Sydney Oval, Australian Cricket Academy vs NZ, One-Day game. ACA won the toss and batted, scoring 241 all out in the 50th over - NZ did well in the end to restrict them to that score, after the huge start that the ACA got. Then NZ fell asleep and failed to get too many runs at all, being all out for 131, although they were 52/6 at one stage. Jones looked OK, getting through to 29, Cairns looked good getting to 29 (and bowled well for 4-39), Blain did well to get 40. No-one else got to double figures. There were three silly runouts. Morrison wasn't playing - being rested I guess, Greatbatch has a broken finger. NZ are a bit worried about Jones - he may miss much of the tour, as his wife is having a baby, and he will re- turn to NZ for the birth and to be with his wife. Geoff Howarth - new team coach blasted the team - forgotten his words - pathetic, inept, that sort of thing. Next game is a 4- day game against NSW, starting Friday. Sport (27 Oct, 1993) A strong batting performance from AIS openers was backed up by good bowling from the New South Wales quicks put even further misery into the start of the New Zealand tour. At the North Sydney Oval, New Zealand's slow start to the tour continues with AIS openers putting on 121 with NSW left hander John Arlenberger starring hitting his 79 off 82 runs with 2 big sixes off Patel. Partner Maher's (QLD) 46 was off 88 balls and although Ricky Ponting at 3 failed his state teammate Divenuto added 45 off 47 balls with a good partnership with AIS captain Fitzgerald (WA) who rotated the strike to Divenuto. Attempting quick runs in the end the AIS team was all out for 241. Cairns bowled well, and Haslam took a great catch to get rid of Ponting. New Zealand started badly against test-prospect Glenn McGrath who dismissed Bryan Young with the fifth ball of the innings. It was not much better through the innings as giant Alley removed Pocock and then Crowe was brilliantly run out by Maher who knocked the ball down and his underhand throw hit the stumps. The third NSW quick allrounder Shane Lee knocked over Rutherford and Patel quickly and when a dreadful mix up between Jones and Cairns in which both seemed to want orders in triplicate and neither knew which paticular end they should be at Jones was run out from a throw from Maher by a long way it was 6 for 52. The flow of wick- ets stopped slightly with the introduction of Divenuto bfore the last four wickets fell for 19 runs with Maher and opening partner Arnberger effecting the run out Watson, Blain beinglast out. It has not be a particulary good started to the tour, and they will have to improve significantly for the tests. Contributed by Phil Shead (drinnen@deakin.OZ.AU)
