Surrey's hopes for promotion in the Championship have been hit with the news that Harbhajan Singh, the India offspinner, won't be joining the club as expected due to international commitments.
It had been hoped that Harbhajan would return to The Oval following stints in 2005 and 2007 but, as happened in 2008, his commitments have forced Surrey to look elsewhere. The club also played down rumours that they have signed a deal with the Pakistan seamer, Sohail Tanvir.
"Following this decision, we began the search for a replacement and can confirm discussions have taken place with a number of players about a short team deal, including the Pakistani left arm seamer Sohail Tanvir," said Gus Mackay, managing director of Surrey Cricket. "However, despite recent reports in the Pakistani media, a deal has yet to be concluded."
Harbhajan and India are due to play a tri-series in Sri Lanka, along with New Zealand, at the end of August.
