Thomians are running riot

By Reggie Fernando our London correspondent

The visiting Thomians have thrashed everyone that came their way since their arrival here in late May.

In their first game against a school side they trounced the well-known public school Haberdashers. When batting first they declared after having amassed the huge score of 320 for the loss of 6 wickets in 48 overs.

Displaying some splendid strokes R. Fernando hammered 117 while C. Goonawardena (64), J. Siriwardena (48) and B. Karunaratna (41) also made useful contributions.

Haberdashers had absolutely no chance against the intelligent bowling of R. Fernando (4/13), S. Peiris (3/28) and N. Ratwatte (2/13) and managed only 109 runs in their 55 overs.

In their last match against a Northants `Under 19' side the Thomians won by 100 runs. Once again R. Fernando treated the Sunday crowd at this rural village green with some hectic hitting scoring 91. C. Goonawardena (89) and J. Siriwardena (61) batted extremely well with U. Fernando stroking a handy 48 runs.

Northants totalled 251 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 50 overs. The major wicket takers for the thomians were P. Perera (2/29) and R. Mahapatona (2/16).

Last Monday they visited Alton Towers one of Britain's best known amusement parks and on Wednesday the Thomians spent the whole day in Shakespeare land - Stratford - upon Avon where they visited the birthplace and home of Shakespeare. On Thursday they will watch the first Test between England and Australia at Edgbaston.
