Graham Manou starred with 190 and Jason Gillespie made his first Pura Cup century as the pair built a record stand that helped South Australia to 482 at Bellerive Oval. At the close Tasmania had staged their own comeback, reaching 1 for 183 with Michael Di Venuto racing to 99 and Ricky Ponting on 50.

Together Manou and Gillespie added 250, which was the highest eighth-wicket stand in South Australia's first-class history, surpassing a 222-run effort by Brad Young and Mick Miller in 2002-03. It also continued the Redbacks' trend of lower-order salvages after middle-order wobbles; the score was 7 for 204 when Gillespie joined Manou.

As Di Venuto will on Wednesday, Manou began the day on 99 and quickly reached triple-figures for the second time in his career. He moved on to post his highest Pura Cup score and almost certainly secured his wicketkeeping spot for the remainder of the season after Shane Deitz took over last summer due to Manou's lack of runs.

Gillespie unbeaten 118 was his third first-class hundred but his first for South Australia. All three of his centuries have come in the past 18 months; first was the memorable 201 as night-watchman in a Test against Bangladesh and his second came in a county match for Yorkshire this winter.

Ponting was hamstrung by the fact that Brett Geeves, who took 5 for 49 on the first day, did not bowl on day two due to a knee injury. The remaining three wickets fell to spin, with Manou trapped lbw by Michael Dighton's part-time offerings and Daniel Marsh cleaning up the final two batsmen.
