Nominations have been opened for the position of chairman of the England & Wales Cricket Board, after David Morgan, the current incumbent, announced his intention to stand down in preparation for taking over the presidency of the ICC next year.

The new chairman will take office on October 1, 2007 and will serve for 18 months until March 31, 2009. Under the current system, nominations will close on July 23, and if at that stage, there is only one nominee from the 18 first-class counties and the MCC, the ECB will ask the 41 members of the ECB (the 18 First Class Counties, MCC, the Minor Counties Cricket Association and the non first-class county boards) to endorse that candidate as chairman.

That period of endorsement will close on August 13, 2007, after which the new chairman of the ECB will be confirmed. If, however, there is more than one nominee from the 18 first-class counties and MCC, an election will be called and conducted by the Electoral Reform Society. Ballot papers would be sent out on July 30, 2007 with the ballot closing on August 13, 2007.

On August 14, 2007 the ballot result will be announced and the 41 members of the ECB will be requested to endorse the winning candidate. Two weeks later, on August 28, the endorsement period will close and the new chairman of the ECB will be confirmed.

The call for an election of chairman was approved by the board of the ECB meeting at Lord's on July 3, 2007.
