England resumed on 279 for 6 and had Adil Rashid, who was 59 overnight, to thank for giving them a sizable first innings. He made 114 off 194 deliveries, which included 15 fours and three sixes, but his dismissal triggered a collapse as the last four wickets fell for 31, Abu Ahmed grabbing three of them.
In reply, Uday Kaul and Aziz Praveez put on 64 for India's first wicket, before Praveez became the first of Rashid's two victims. India wobbled again at 153 for 3 when they lost Sumit Sharma and Kaul in quick succession to really give England the edge.
But Tanmay Srivastava and Virat Kholi steadied the ship and gave India the edge by the close.
