Although a scan showed no major damage, it was decided he should return to Australia for rest and recovery, rather than travel to Bangladesh, where a two-Test series starts in Fatullah on Sunday.
This is the latest injury setback to hit Tait's start to international cricket. Following his debut at Trent Bridge, during the Ashes series, he was forced to miss the majority of the Australian summer after damaging his shoulder in a club match ahead of the Super Series.
He made a comeback late in the season and sealed his place on the tour of South Africa with six wickets in the ING Cup final. However, he was overlooked for a starting place by Michael Kasprowicz and now faces another frustrating period on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Australia will make a decision on Kasprowicz and Justin Langer - who have both picked up injuries during the Johannesburg Test - tomorrow before they depart for Bangladesh. Langer was forced to retire hurt with concussion, after a blow to head in the first innings, and Kasprowicz felt soreness in his back.
