Michael Vaughan has been ruled out of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's, after failing to recover from the knee injury he suffered while batting in the nets on Monday. Marcus Trescothick has been named as captain instead. Andrew Strauss makes his Test debut, and is likely to open with Trescothick.

Trescothick, 28, has not skippered in a Test match before, although he has led England in two one-day internationals - both won - against Zimbabwe and South Africa. In the last of those, against South Africa at the Oval last summer, he scored 114, the sixth of his seven one-day hundreds. Despite a recent modest run in Test cricket, Trescothick still averages 41.24 from his 47 appearances.

Strauss, the Middlesex captain, was called up after Vaughan's injury, and elbowed his way past Paul Collingwood - an original choice in the squad - with the selectors keeping Mark Butcher at No. 3. They also opted to keep faith in Simon Jones, despite James Anderson's recent run of form in the County Championship. And though the spinners have done little of note in recent seasons, there was a place for Ashley Giles. New Zealand had no such worries - they named their starting XI on Tuesday.

And it seems that you can't keep knees out of the news: Aleem Dar, the Pakistani umpire who was due to stand in this Test, has been ruled out with a knee injury of his own. Rudi Koertzen, the South African, has stepped in and will officiate alongside Australia's Darrell Hair. The match referee is the former West Indian captain Clive Lloyd.
