Rain threatens Zimbabwe ODI series

The first of five one-day internationals between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe is in serious doubt after three days of intermittent rain in Bulawayo, although the authorities are determined to sneak a game in, even if it has to be a shortened affair.

"A large part of the outfield is unplayable at the moment," said Noel Pick, the head groundsman, who doubts that there will be a full day's play. "Any more rain and our prospects are remote, but we will play cricket if we possibly can."

But Zimbabwe's captain, Heath Streak, would prefer to play all or nothing, because he fears a shortened game would favour Bangladesh. "From the point of view of getting a result," said Streak, "I'm hoping for a full day or none at all."

Zimbabwe's 14-man squad includes the fast bowler Andy Blignaut, who took a hat-trick in the first Test in Harare but sustained a thigh strain ahead of the second Test. Gary Brent is also included to supplement the bowling. Bangladesh, meanwhile, have recalled their former captain Khaled Mahmud, in place of Alok Kapali, who damaged his forearm while batting in this week's abandoned match against Zimbabwe A.
