One England captain is to replace another at Lord's, as Tony Lewis takes over from Ted Dexter as the chairman of MCC's cricket committee.
Lewis, who captained England on their tour of India and Pakistan in 1972-73, is a former president of MCC, as well as a former BBC cricket presenter. The committee major responsibilities include upholding the Laws of Cricket, maintaining the main ground at Lord's, and managing the playing programme of MCC - the world's most active cricket-playing club.
During his five-year spell as chairman, Dexter played a key role in launching the Spirit of Cricket initiative, planning the re-laying of the outfield at Lord's, and enabling women cricketers to play an increasingly active role in MCC's playing programme - both through out-matches and the appointment of the first female MCC Young Cricketers.
"On top of all his achievements as a batsman, Ted has been an outstanding chairman of MCC's Cricket committee," said the new president of MCC, Charles Fry, whose own term of office also starts tomorrow. "His knowledge, dedication and common sense have been of immense benefit to the club. We are very fortunate, though, that one former England captain will be succeeded by another - and I am sure that Tony Lewis will help the committee build on Ted's impressive record of achievement."
