Shane Warne has accused Andrew Strauss of showing a lack of respect to Test cricket by resting for England's tour of Bangladesh, and has questioned whether Alastair Cook is up to the task of leading the team in his absence.
"When I heard that Andrew Strauss is being rested it just doesn't sit right with me," Warne told journalists at the launch of the Royals 2020 franchise at Lord's. "When I am captain I want to get the best out of my players. Maybe that means putting an arm around them or maybe it means giving them a kick up the backside.
"Alastair Cook might be completely different. He might want to treat everyone the same way. If I am captain of a side I want to stop my authority on a side.
Warne also questioned the timing of Cook's appointment, suggesting that following his encouraging return to form during the recent tour of South Africa, he would be better served concentrating on his batting and spared the burden of captaincy. Instead, he is likely to be opening alongside the debutant, Michael Carberry, who could prove to be a rival in the long-term if he enjoys a productive series.
"I think he has been under pressure for his place in the side," said Warne. "He's suddenly found himself, he's made a hundred and now he is captain. What happens if Michael Carberry gets three hundreds and Alastair Cook gets a couple of runs? What happens then? Do you drop an England captain?
I hope they [England] are not taking Bangladesh too easy because they can be quite strong," he added. "What if they win the first Test? Does Strauss fly out for the second? I hope it's not the start of a trend. It's a lack of respect for Test cricket.
"It's disappointing that the captain of England decides to have a rest from a Test series, I can't comprehend that. Any time you represent your country it's special and I cannot understand how you can rest your captain."

I think the culture is different for souther hemisphere teams as they get a long break over their winter (unless they're touring England). England play year round, every summer and a tour every winter. Last year we had a long trip to South Africa over Christmas, this year it's the Ashes in Australia. England's players never get a long respite from cricket, and in Strauss' case it's exacerbated by the fact that he's single-handedly dragged us up from the bottom of the barrel, from the shambles we were in when Pietersen lost the captaincy. I reckon he deserves a break and, without any fear of contradiction, Bangladesh are the opponents to do it against as they are still undoubtedly, statistically the weakest side in world cricket.
Posted byTo be honest, I don't think not this is a disrespect at all. Warne is making this issue because deep down he does not believe Bangladesh should be a test side. Any players can take a rest at any point for various strategic reasons. It was the case in the past. Why is it an issue now? Besides I don't think Strauss is such a big player like Sachin or Pointing. He is a player who is struggling now and possibly deserve some rests - I would say for good! The best answer to all of these debate is for Bangladesh to show their performance and teach the English cricket team a lesson in their own back yard. At least I hope they do it. Also I am also disappointed to see some of these comments which suggest Bangladesh should be replaced by Ireland and Afganistan. I would ask the writer to go and check how much money was invested in Bangladesh . Remember, if sub continent countries stop playing cricket, ICC would have nowhere to go but beg!!
Posted by FlashAsh on (February 09 2010, 21:43 PM GMT)What a load of utter tripe!! Warnie spews forth with his Ashes ante-upping and everyone thinks he speaks gospel!! Warnie has only ever captained for 20 overs a time and Ponting regularly takes "rests" does anyone complain? Do we all cry he's disrespecting the game or his opponents? No! Get a life! Warnie stick to your royals and poker, your bluffing with a losing hand cos England won the ashes and you the IPL, so maybe you should take a rest from Captaincy?
Posted by NickHughes on (February 09 2010, 15:19 PM GMT)I think this is the usual smoke and mirrors we've come to see from Warne since his retirement. Grab some eye-catching attention via a strong point of view aimed at English cricket. Like a lot of retired Aussie test cricketers turned pundits, he seems as if he's on a mission from Cricket Australia to unsettle the English by starting up the war of words before the Ashes. I didn't hear Warne pipe up when Ponting opted out of matches and left the captaincy in Gilchrist's hands.
Posted by crescentboy on (February 09 2010, 14:38 PM GMT)Bangladesh do not deserve better. True there has been some recent improvement, but for the investment and exposure they have received they have not progressed as they should have. Can't help but feel Ireland and Afghanistan might have gone further given the same opportunities. As for Warne, good cricket tactician, but other than that most of his cricket musings are just rubbish.
Posted by EVH316 on (February 09 2010, 14:30 PM GMT)It is a very alarming development, partly because I have yet to be even slightly convinced of any genuine leadership qualities from Cook - I`m not even convinced about genuine Test batting class - but mainly as I feel that Bangladesh has made some serious progress recently. That improvement, combined with England`s unequalled skill at getting a bloody nose due to underrating an opponent, suggests a series that might be more equal than most. I understand Strauss will have a hectic year, but we are again guilty of prioritising opponents and series, when to become a better side we need to win, regularly, against each opponent - Vaughan`s England proved this in Bangladesh last time out, when not only did they earn the win against a competitive side in their own backyard, but more commitment to fitness work and bonding off the field set up the following 18 months of success. It ain`t all about the Ashes. Short-termism is not something I thought Flower and Strauss would be guilty of.
Posted byNote to andy_86, MS Dhoni sat out for two tests because he was given a two-match ban (due to slow over-rate in a previous match or something), not because he didn't think too much the other side.
Posted by StaalBurgher on (February 09 2010, 11:23 AM GMT)Warne has a point, but it is hardly such a great insult. More like not making eye contact when you are introduced to someone. England have wanted to give Carberry a chance for ages and they don't want to scupper Cook's potential recovery of form. This has more to do with giving other players a chance than disrespect for Test cricket. Let us not pretend Bangladesh, although plucky at times as they showed against India, has a significant chance of victory. This is a calculated, low risk, descision. In fact it is a sacrifice from Strauss to not play as he is probably forgoing a century or two. Rather praise him that he is making that sacrifice to give another player a go.

Posted by HOWZNOW on (February 09 2010, 10:28 AM GMT)Arrogant as ever "When I heard that Andrew Strauss is being rested it just doesn't sit right with me," Bif EGO Warnie can't bear to be out of the limelight. And then he goes on to tell us what a wonderful Did Ponting never allow himself a rest. Strauss was exhausted after a very important series against South Africa. What authority does Warne have to "pontificate" I thought he turned professional in snooker. Maybe he should stick to speaking, where his opinion carries some weight And then he goes on to tell us what a bloody marvelous captain he is in the IPL "When I am captain I want to get the best out of my players. Maybe that means putting an arm around them .......... it's all typical Warne EGO SPEAK !!
