Wisden overview
In the Meril Challenge Cup of April 1999, Mehrab became the first Bangladeshi to hit an international hundred, taking a stylish 101 off Zimbabwe. His 64 against West Indies the following month was also his country's first World Cup half-century. A small, light-footed opener, Mehrab has been viewed as the most complete technician in the side, though his front-foot bias has proved a problem at Test level. Records must run in the family: Azhar Hossain, Mehrab's uncle, scored Bangladesh's first one-day fifty. Mehrab's prospects for further glories were dented in 2004, however, when he was banned from cricket for a year after breaching the terms of his contract in a domestic competition. Simon Briggs
