Brian Lara has predicted that even a full-strength team West Indies will have a tough time on the tour of Australia that starts next month. West Indies lost all Tests on their previous two visits to Australia, and Lara felt the Ashes defeat earlier this year will make the home side even more determined to win.

"I fear the West Indies could be in for a bit of a hiding,'' Lara told the Age. ''I think one of the handicaps will be that they haven't played together for a long time, due to the dispute with the board.

''That, coupled with Australia coming off an Ashes defeat with a captain who is under some pressure. They will be trying to get their team back on track. I fear West Indies will feel a backlash from that."

Caribbean cricket had been in turmoil since July when the region's leading cricketers called a strike after a contractual dispute with their board, which forced West Indies to field second-string sides for the home series against Bangladesh and the ICC Champions Trophy. West Indies turned in poor performances in both those contests, and fears that a weakened side would tour Australia receded only last week when the stand-off moved closer to resolution.

Lara felt the return of experienced players including Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan would help but didn't expect any Test victories for West Indies. "I will just be happy if we play good cricket, and play cricket over five days and not throw in the towel.''

The last time the two sides met in a Test series was in the Caribbean last year, when Australia pulled off a hard-fought 2-0 victory.

Lara has the international pedigree to comment on this situation as he has been in these jams before. People on here are talking as though Australia have it in the bag, have they? Like they did the Ashes??? I mean the batting "genius" of Panesar and Swann undid this "number one" test team!!! So I daresay Messrs. Gayle, Sarwan, Chanderpaul, etc. will have a great time! W.I are weak, no denying that, but Australia are not the force they used to be either. It will be two teams on their way down contesting a series that will more than likely fizzle into a draw, whitewash.....not likely! As for people disputing Lara, are you crazy????? That man is pure class! Arguably the best batsman ever.....Keep your bradman! keep your Botham, Keep your Sachin..........There is only one real exhiLARAting batsman!

West Indies has to bring in new faces like Barath, Pollard, Roach alongwith Chanderpaul, Gayle, Bravo brothers Edwards, Jerome Taylor, they are world beaters.....

dontgoogleme you seem to forget that no team stays on top of the world forever. do you remember when for almost 20 years West Indies were on top? how many of Australia's cricketer's were good enough to make our team? remember after we were beaten soundly down under in 76 Australia did not win a frank worrel trophy until 95! dont count your eggs before they are hatched because they just might end up rotting

I think West Indies will do very well in Australia with their dispute with the board resolved, I am confident they will beat Australia with players like Roach, Travis Dowlin. Bravo brothers, sammy,Bernard, Gayle, Pollard, Morton, Edwards,Taylor, simmons, barath and not to forget the ever reliable chanderpaul. They will be hungry for a win.

Dontgoogle me I know you are hurt by the 20/20 wash WI hit yr precious australians and then to lose the ashes. The only thing they won was the ODI series. And for your so called state sides they seem to be weaker than normal. Australia's fast bowlers not ready for WI fast bowlers in terms of pace for sure. Roach is faster than lee. Is pressure for d australians it already showing on Dontgoogle's me face.LOL

Lara is right! After the dispute prolonging for lot of time, the WI players must be so short of good match practice. Also Australia are coming off a serious Ashes defeat which for them is the most painful in the world. WI are in for a serious hiding unless they produce something special. Lara's words should not be treated as negative. It could also act as a spur for the WI side to prove him wrong and do the impossible.

I am a WI supporter and I think that it is very premature to write off the WI at this stage. Are we still in dream land with Mc Grath and co. or are we realizing that this is a different Aussie team. No Hayden, no Warne, no Gilchrist, no McGrath and in the last series Australia have taken some beatings. They lost to SA in Australia which they hadnt done in a long, long time.OK. They won in SA but then fell to defeat in England. I dont think that the WI should be brushed aside as a challenge(we are assuming that the best side will play).WI really demolished them in the world T20, and seriously was the only team that gave them a scare in the champions trophy(with the weakened side). I am saying that they could pull a few surprises. We ll have to wait and see.

drekilladev99, i think your a bit to optimistic there. W.I will be destroyed. Dont believe me? Name 1 West Indian player that could make it into the Australian XI Gayle? Dont make me laugh, in a batsmens era he averages 39. And i could bat against his offies. Chanderpaul? Maybe on a good day, but weve got better Nash? He couldnt secure a spot for queensland, let alone Australia Sarwan? He averages 39 with the bat if you exlude bangladesh/Zimbabwe. Even with those its still only 42. Bravo? Hes good, but nothing special. Plus weve got better. Ramdin? He would be our number 5, behind Haddin, Paine, Manou and Ronchi Taylor? Edwards? Lets see, we have Lee, Johnson, Hilfenhaus, Siddle, Clarke. Not even mentioning the rest. they wouldnt fit Benn? Shouldnt even be in YOUR side. Miller is a much better bowler in my opinion. Miller still wouldnt make it though. Plus WI have no champion players. Australia have it easy. You might get us a bit in hit-and-giggle T20. But weve got you in ODIs/Tests .

I am afraid Brian Lara has not made a proper assessment of the capabilities of the current crop of West Indies players. In the late 50s the situation was similar. But they needed Sir Frank Worrel to bring them togetherand make them realise how good they were. That spirit never deserted them right through the 60s and 70s under Lloyd and then Viv Richards. They somehow lost their way because niether Lara nor Chanderpaul nor Gayle till date have been able to forge this bunch of talented players as a National team because of divergent interests and pulls. If someone like Ganga has been able to establish unity in the T and T team I think he could pave the way for a great West Indies team again. Frank Worrell was past his prime when he took over in 1960. I am not sure if Ganga would be brought in as captain for the Australian series. But that is the way to go. He could give all cricket loving people the real champons of the game back. Australia is not going to have it easy this time

It is true that the Aussies have a stronger overall team, but what cannot be overlooked is that the Windies have a number of match-winners in their squad, and should one or more of these players fire, they could give the Aussies a run for their money. They are unlikely to win a test match, but should not be completely written off, least of all by someone they probably revere and respect. What is Lara trying to achieve by making such a statement?
