He played first grade cricket with University of Queensland, and with Gold Coast and appeared for Queensland in first-class cricket as a lower-order right-hand batsman and leg break and googly bowler before commencing umpiring. He made his first-class umpiring debut officiating in the Queensland v New Zealanders match at the Brisbane Cricket Gound in November 2001. In 2008 it was announced he would stand in his first international match, between India and Sri Lanka at Manuka Oval.
