Mark Cosgrove rescued his new state Tasmania with his first century since switching from South Australia, as the Tigers fought back from a shaky start against Victoria. Cosgrove's 159 was the standout on a day when no other batsman passed fifty, and at stumps Tasmania had held on to reach 9 for 315.
It was a good result after they slumped to 3 for 26 having won the toss, as the former Tasmania fast man Damien Wright provided some early headaches. But Cosgrove turned things around with a pair of century partnerships, first with Alex Doolan (42) and then with Travis Birt, who made 47.
Cosgrove ended up posting his highest first-class score in Australia since 2005-06, a summer that resulted in him being called up into the ODI side. He has made bigger scores in county cricket since then, but South Australia will be left to wonder what they could have done differently to get the best out of Cosgrove in recent years.
Finally, Cosgrove fell to an unlikely weapon when he was caught at long-on against the offspin of David Hussey, who also struck in his next over. That sparked a mini-collapse that included Peter Siddle having Ben Hilfenhaus caught behind, but by stumps the Tigers were still hanging on with Brady Jones at the crease on 25 and Adam Griffith on 6.
