South Australia will move into the outright lead of the Sheffield Shield if they can turn their dominance over Queensland into victory on Wednesday. The Redbacks went level on eight points with the Bulls after taking first-innings points and by stumps on a hot third day had extended their advantage to 280.

After resuming at 4 for 137, the visitors knew they would have to fight hard to save the match and the middle and lower order inflated the total to 308 before being dismissed after tea. Chris Hartley continued his strong batting form with a tough 68 and Wade Townsend, the No. 3, chipped in with 66, but the Bulls missed a big individual score and fell 169 short of South Australia's first innings.

Aaron O'Brien, the left-arm spinner, led the hosts with 3 for 66 while Cullen Bailey and Jake Haberfield picked up two wickets each. Queensland had started well with Townsend and Hartley adding 56 to the overnight score, but Townsend was beaten by Michael Klinger's sharp throw at mid-on to end the resistance. Hartley, who is opening in the one-day side, joined with the captain Chris Simpson (38) to put on 58 before the wicketkeeper was taken by Bailey.

The tail continued to delay the Redbacks, who did not enforce the follow-on, but their batsmen were able to face 21 overs and quickly increased their buffer by 111 for the loss of two wickets. Klinger was unbeaten on 58 off 62 balls and South Australia's next decision is when to declare for the second time in the game.
