Michael Klinger led a slow and steady performance from South Australia as Queensland's bowlers toiled for little reward in stifling heat at Adelaide Oval. At stumps, the Redbacks had crawled to 3 for 275 with Cameron Borgas unbeaten on 56 and Tom Cooper on 49.

Cooper lifted the tempo and scored his runs from 68 balls after the rest of the top order took an unhurried approach. All of the batsmen made reasonable starts but Klinger was the only one who threatened a first-day century, until he was caught at slip off the bowling of Scott Walter for 84.

That ended an 88-run stand between Klinger and Borgas, who was only included in the match because of Mark Cosgrove's hamstring injury. Borgas was fresh from a career-best 90 in the FR Cup match against Victoria during the week and he proved just as valuable in the longer format.

The innings was set up by a near three-hour 57 from the captain Daniel Harris, who had put on 27 with James Smith (21) for the opening wicket after deciding to bat. Chris Swan had Smith caught at second slip and Harris was snared at mid-on off Walter but the rewards were few and far between for the Queensland bowlers.

The Bulls attack has become accustomed to plenty of assistance from the seaming and swinging Gabba pitches early in the season and they struggled for impact on a flat surface, on a day when the temperature reached 36 degrees in Adelaide. The spinners Chris Simpson and Daniel Doran bowled 41 over between them without a breakthrough.
