George Bailey will take over as Tasmania's captain next summer after Dan Marsh decided to reduce his duties as his career winds down. Marsh, 35, does not plan to retire but the move to promote Bailey signals the start of the team's regeneration.

Marsh has spent six years in charge and will always be remembered for his role in leading Tasmania to their first Pura Cup trophy in 2006-07. He also steered them to a couple of one-day prizes.

"I have been thinking about my cricket a lot over the past 12 months and while I'm not ready to retire I think it is time for some new blood in the captaincy role,'' he told AAP. "Leading the team to the three titles are of course significant highlights for me as captain and the Pura Cup win is a moment I will never forget."

Bailey is a maturing batsman who led Tasmania in 2008-09 with 637 Sheffield Shield runs, including two centuries. His first-class debut came in 2004-05 and he has represented Australia A.
