Jacques Kallis has been ruled out of the Twenty20 international against Australia on February 24th - and neither is he likely to be fit enough for the one-dayers, which begin just two days later. Kallis and the team physio, Shane Jabaar, will visit a specialist on Tuesday to see how his elbow injury is doing after treatment.

"My recommendation will be that we keep his elbow in mind," said Jabaar, "and not the upcoming international fixtures. His elbow is my concern." He expects Kallis to be fit for the Test series, though.

He went on to say that it is unlikely that Justin Kemp will be fit enough to bowl in the first one-dayer, which is in Centurion on February 26th. He said: "I don't see any reason why he can't bat, but I don't think he'll be able to bowl."

South Africa's coach Mickey Arthur admits this is a blow, saying: "If Kemp can't bowl, it will definitely upset the balance of the team." But in brighter news for South Africa, Arthur says he hopes that Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel with both be available for the ODI series. Their fitness will be assessed next week.

Arthur says the Twenty20, at the Wanderers, will be used to give some younger players an opportunity. "We are going to include some of the players who have done well in the local series," he said.

AB de Villiers will certainly be in the frame. "We sent AB back home to learn some more about ODI cricket," said Arthur. "He had a bit of an identity crisis in this form of the game. I'm happy to see how well he did and we will definitely consider him."
