Adam Gilchrist, who will captain Australia against Sri Lanka on Thursday, has been fined 40% of his match fee after pleading guilty to dissent in a hearing in Adelaide. Gilchrist was reported after Australia's match against South Africa in Brisbane on January 15 when he asked Aleem Dar to refer a run-out of Boeta Dippenaar to the third umpire.

Replays showed Dippenaar was in the air when Andrew Symonds's throw hit the stumps, but Gilchrist became the third Australian after Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee to be charged with a bad-behaviour offence this summer. While McGrath and Lee escaped with reprimands, Gilchrist's pay was docked by Jeff Crowe, the match referee, today.

"Adam immediately pleaded guilty to the charge, understanding the need to end this sort of action on the field during play," Crowe said. The maximum punishment was a 50% fine and Gilchrist also received an official reprimand for "showing dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse".

Crowe made the decision after a hearing in Adelaide with Gilchrist, Steve Bernard, the Australia manager, and the on-field umpires Dar and Daryl Harper. Gilchrist was appointed as captain while Ricky Ponting rests this week.
