Thornely doubles up on records as WA follow on

Dominic Thornely broke a domestic sixes record, shared a 219-run 10th-wicket partnership with Stuart MacGill, reached an unbeaten 261 and then joined his New South Wales team-mates as they forced Western Australia to follow on at the SCG.

With 11 sixes Thornely broke the mark of David Hookes, who hit 10 for South Australia against New South Wales in 1985-86. Thornely, 26, predicted the night before that he would pass the record and, resuming on 204, smashed the ninth and 19th balls of the day, both from the left-arm chinaman Beau Casson, over the fence. "The spin bowler came on and bowled both balls in the area I didn't mind," Thornely said. "It's nice to be able to break the record as David Hookes was known for his big-hitting ability."

Thornely broke another Australian domestic record when he and MacGill, who made only 27, combined for their incredible partnership. Only the New South Wales pair of Alan Kippax and Hal Hooker have made more for the last wicket, with their world-record stand of 307 coming against Victoria in Melbourne in 1928-29.

When the partnership finished Stuart Clark picked up four wickets and Matthew Nicholson three as Western Australia were dismissed for 137. Stuart MacGill, who could be in line for a Test return with the thumb injury to Shane Warne, took 2 for 20 off 10 overs.
