Profile

A major Queensland batsman either side of the war, Rex Ernest Rogers was a burly left-hander who averaged a steady 35.97 for his state, with eight centuries among his 3382 runs. The highest was 181 in only 231 minutes at Adelaide in 1937-38, after Bradman had made 246 for the home side. Rogers, sometimes opening with Bill Brown and sometimes batting in the middle order, usually made his runs at a good rate. In Dec 1940, in the match in which Arthur Morris made two centuries for NSW on debut, Rogers scored 114 in only 143 minutes against a demanding attack including O'Reilly, Pepper, McCool and Vic Jackson. And the next month, on a Gabba pitch recently flooded, he rattled up 92 and 103, neither innings lasting as much as 2'/ hours. Born in Cairns on Aug 24, 1916, Rogers made his debut for Queensland in Jan 1936, and captained the state in later years when WA Brown was absent. He died, after a long illness, on May 22.
