Mel Jones was brought up in Melbourne but gained much of her cricketing pedigree from her West Indian father, even though she didn't meet him until she was 16. She made her Test debut in 1998, but a dip in form led to a two-year absence from the international scene including, frustratingly, missing the Ashes tour of 2000. She returned to the side for the series against England in 2003. She also captains Surrey in the English County Championship and works for them in a development role.
