A solidly-built, aggressive batsman from the country town of Colac in south-west Victoria, Aaron Finch made his first-class debut against the touring Indians in December 2007 but his only involvement was to catch Wasim Jaffer as rain ruined the game. His FR Cup debut was brief as well - he made 2 against Western Australia - but he had a boom year in club cricket. Playing for Geelong, Finch scored 1085 runs in Melbourne's Premier Cricket competition, just short of the all-time season record and confirming his progress after two winters at the Academy. The 2007 stint ended with a ban for not keeping his room tidy, but he showed he was maturing by losing weight during 2007-08, his first season with a full Victoria contract. In 2008-09 he made five FR Cup and five Twenty20 appearances with little impact but his powerful striking earned him a place in Victoria's Champions League Twenty20 squad. Finch represented Australia at the Under-19 World Cup in 2006 and showed his power with 74 off 57 balls against South Africa.
